OAKVILLE SUSTAINABLE FOOD PARTNERSHIP
was
incorporated in December 2008 by the founders of the Kerr Village
Organic Farmers’ Market. We are a not-for profit, volunteer-run,
environmental organization with a mandate to support local eating and
ecological farming by partnering with the community. It is a collective
effort that includes people from all walks of life in the
revitalization of their schools, homes, community and, ultimately, in
the environmental, social and economic functioning of the region.

OSFP's VISION
The
Oakville Sustainable Food Partnership envisions a transformed food
system in which every Oakville resident has access to safe, nutritious,
and affordable food grown by a thriving network of sustainable farms
and gardens.
A
greener Oakville that embraces a sustainable, local food system will
enhance human health, promote environmental renewal, foster local
economies, and link rural and urban communities.
OSFP's GOALS
1. To
provide small farms with alternative distribution programs which will
allow them to sell directly to consumers and thereby enable them to be
economically viable and sustainable.
2. To
provide consumers, especially those of low or fixed incomes, with
low-cost ways to obtain fresher, more nutritious food through direct
purchase from farmers or producers.
3.
To develop, organize, manage and operate sustainable Farmers’ Markets
in accordance with the regulations of the Province of Ontario and
Halton Department of Health.
4. To develop and promote programs for public education on the nutritional values of fresh foods.
5. To encourage and promote growth in the number and variety of family farms, backyard and community gardens.
6.
To create opportunities for families to better understand the human
side of our food system by meeting the farmers who produce our food.
7. To
develop replicable systems and models for sustainable Farmers’ Market
organizations and promotion and for other related programs.
8. To promote and support sustainable agriculture.
9. To help revitalize city and urban centers, where possible.
10. To provide regular social, festive marketplaces for community unification and enjoyment.
11. To
promote and support community food security, and sustainability within
geographically-defined areas to ensure equal access to sufficient,
high-quality food for all.
12. To provide training and job opportunities by fostering urban agriculture programs.
13. To develop local purchasing guidelines and incentives for governments, hospitals, and Halton institutions.
14. To
increase and promote local and organic food in grocery stores, farmers’
markets, restaurants, institutions and other foodoutlets.
15.
To explore self-help models like cooperative buying systems, collective
kitchens and community gardens that will have the potential to address
short-term issues of household hunger, while also providing longer term
benefits by building the capacity of individuals and communities.
16.
To provide training and job opportunities by fostering urban
agriculture programs such as spin gardening and bicycle delivery
services and a fruit tree project that harvests fruit from trees in
Oakville that would otherwise go to waste.
